We may not be getting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 until at least until 2020, but according to director James Gunn, most of the songs for the soundtrack have already been selected.
A third Guardians movie has been discussed for a while, and in April of this year it was confirmed that Gunn would return to write and direct the film. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is said to set up the next ten to twenty years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with some movies being planned “around” it. The film will also end the story for Star-Lord’s team of Guardians, allowing a new team to become the focus of a fourth Guardians film.
Back in July, James Gunn claimed that he had narrowed the soundtrack selection for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 down to 181 songs, and that the list could get even longer than that. Now Gunn confirms that the list has been considerably shortened. At least ten songs have already been chosen. If the number of songs in each film is somewhat consistent, that would leave around four songs left to be selected, as the soundtrack for the first film contained ten songs while the second contained 14.
Actually this is from a long time ago. Almost all of the songs - at least 10 - are already chosen. https://t.co/K9ZzcIpQ5B— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) October 5, 2017
Though the music for the film has been teased, not much is known about what songs fans should expect to hear. What we do know is that the songs will come from the Zune given to Star-Lord by Yondu. As the soundtrack for the first two movies were based on the musical taste of Star-Lord’s mother, the soundtrack for the third movie will be inspired by Yondu. We got a taste of what kind of music is on the Zune at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with the folk rock song “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens.
The first two Guardians soundtracks were full of classic songs from the 1970s. The first movie featured more well-known hits while the second movie contained more obscure songs. The third movie could go in a different direction by encompassing more genres, or it could introduce Star-Lord to modern music. However, some fans hope that the soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will stay true to what made the previous soundtracks so successful by continuing to put the focus on ’70s music. The first mixtape became the fifth best-selling album of 2014.
