The first trailer for Robert Rodriguez’ Alita Battle Angel is coming tomorrow, but the first footage is already here. Studios are starting to adapt more and more manga/anime series for the big screen, and Alita marks the next attempt. Based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Yukito Kishiro, the live-action take will star Maze Runner’s Rosa Salazar. She will play the lead role of Alita, a female cyborg that lives in the distant future.

Alita was directed by Spy Kids and Sin City filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron. Production has moved along quietly over the past year, ahead of the movie’s summer 2018 theatrical release. At the same time, the talent involved both in front of and behind camera here has caught the eye of many and its almost time to see what they have delivered.
20th Century Fox released the first glimpse at Alita Battle Angel, but has more coming soon. The brief scenes are simply the primer for the launch of the full trailer tomorrow. The teaser (see the video in the space above) offers a few quick looks at Alita’s cyborg body. It also reveals Christopher Waltz’ Doctor Dyson Ido, at the very end.
Since this teaser itself doesn’t reveal too much, fans of the source material looking forward to the film will need to check out the full trailer for more. Additional looks at Salazar as Alita are a must for the full trailer. The trailer may also further reveal the supporting cast around her. In addition to Waltz, the Alita Battle Angel ensemble includes Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), Mahershala Ali (Luke Cage), Jennifer Connelly (Requiem for a Dream), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast & Furious), Eiza González (Baby Driver), and more.
Fox is certainly hoping for Alita to be a surprise box office hit next summer. It already has an IMAX release commitment, and tomorrow’s trailer will mark its first piece of marketing since the teaser poster was released over the summer. Alita will need to make an immediate impact in its opening weekend, so this trailer could help generate the necessary interest. Alita will go head to head with Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, but will also have to compete with Ant-Man & The Wasp, Dwayne Johnson’s Skyscraper, and Mission: Impossible 6 next summer in theaters.
The first look offered here is merely the beginning of Alita’s marketing push. Hopefully, it will be followed up by a strong trailer showing on Friday.
