The Alien: Blackout video game officially exists now, although players might find themselves surprised to learn that it’s a mobile game. Rumors about the game began circulating after 20th Century Fox trademarked its title in November 2018. That led to speculation a new game in the Alien franchise would get announced soon.
Although fans expected an official reveal of Alien: Blackout at this year’s Game Awards, an announcement did not arrive then. Fans began speculating again, though, after the official Alien Twitter account posted a teaser with footage from the original 1979 Alien film, after which it asked the question: “Who is Amanda Ripley?” This led to rumors that the social media post was a direct tease of Alien: Blackout, although there was never confirmation from the account that this was the case.
The description also confirms the game’s premise. The main character, Amanda, is the daughter of Ellen Ripley, and the timeframe is between the first Alien film, and its sequel, Aliens. Gameplay will include choices made by the player that affect the title’s final outcome. The description describes Alien: Blackout as a game based on stealth, much like the previous AAA title Alien: Isolation, which forced players to rely on stealth and tools readily available in the environment. For those wanting something different, though, don’t worry: FoxNext’s Cold Iron Studios is still working on a multiplayer shooter for PC and consoles.
The terror of Alien is brought to life in Alien: Blackout. Try to stay alive while trapped aboard a crippled Weyland-Yutani space station carrying a deadly Xenomorph as it tirelessly hunts you and the crew. Outsmart the perfect hunter by making perilous choices. Players must rely on the damaged controls of the space station or risk sacrificing crew members to avoid deadly contact, permanently altering the outcome of the game.
Survive seven fear-inducing levels by remotely guiding Amanda Ripley’s crew through increasingly challenging tasks using only the station’s emergency systems. The uncertainty and unpredictability of both the alien and her crew can impose total defeat for Amanda and the entire station.
With the 40th anniversary of the original Alien movie happening this year, fans can expect a lot more Alien content in 2019. Although a third prequel, Alien: Awakening, may or may not occur, there is definitely more of the franchise on the way to mark its anniversary, as teased by the official Instagram account of the Alien franchise. As those posts referenced Amanda Ripley, Alien: Blackout is part of the franchise’s plan for the year, but could more Alien announcements arrive? Fans certainly want more - bring on the xenomorphs.
